What is a Mental Leap?

The Mental Leap is a concept that refers to a stage of development in which babies grow rapidly and acquire new cognitive skills and abilities. This idea was popularized by the Dutch parenting book "The Wonder Weeks." The authors, Hetty van de Rijt and Frans Plooij, described a period of rapid cognitive development in babies and called this "mental leap."

Main characteristics of mental leaps

  • Rapid developmentDuring mental leaps, babies suddenly acquire new skills and make leaps in their understanding of the world around them.
  • IrritabilityDuring mental leaps, babies are often irritable and prone to crying. This is thought to be due to the stress and confusion that comes with rapid development.
  • Predictable leapsThese leaps are predictable as normal developmental patterns and occur at intervals of a few weeks to a few months after birth.

Stages of mental leaps

Mental leaps usually begin a few weeks after a baby's birth and are said to have 10 leaps by the 75th week (about 1.5 years). Each leap has a name such as "sensory world" or "pattern world", and each has a specific cognitive development theme.

The purpose of Mental Leap

Understanding Mental Leap helps parents understand the reasons for their baby's fussiness and moodiness and provide appropriate support. Understanding leaps helps parents monitor and encourage the development of new skills in their baby.

How to calculate Mental Leap

  • The expected date of birth is used as the base date (not the actual date of birth) *Because development in the womb is important
  • The start of each leap is calculated based on the number of weeks from the expected date of birth
  • The duration of each leap is approximately one week
