What is ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)?

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a developmental disorder characterized by persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that affect an individual's daily life and social functioning.

Main Symptoms

  • Inattention: Difficulty sustaining attention, frequent forgetfulness, poor organization skills, etc.
  • Hyperactivity: Restlessness, constant movement
  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, difficulty waiting for turns

Types of ADHD

  • Predominantly Inattentive Type (ADHD-I): Primarily characterized by inattention
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type (ADHD-HI): Marked by hyperactivity and impulsivity
  • Combined Type (ADHD-C): Exhibits both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms

Diagnostic Criteria (Based on DSM-5)

  • Symptoms must have been present before the age of 12
  • Symptoms must be observed in multiple environments (home, school, workplace, etc.)
  • Clear functional impairment in academics, work, or interpersonal relationships

Diagnostic Process

ADHD diagnosis involves interviews, behavioral observations, psychological tests, and screening tests. Differential diagnosis from other mental disorders is also crucial.

Treatment and Support

  • Medication (Methylphenidate, Atomoxetine, etc.)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Adjustments and support in living environments

With appropriate treatment and support, the quality of life for individuals with ADHD can be improved.

Explanation of the Logic Behind This Check Tool

This diagnostic tool evaluates the possibility of ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) based on the following three categories:

  • Attention Challenges
  • Behavioral Regulation
  • Emotional Impulsivity

Scoring Method

Each category's questions are rated on a 5-point scale:

  • Not at all (0)
  • Rarely (1)
  • Sometimes (2)
  • Often (3)
  • Almost Always (4)

If the slider value is 3 or higher for a question, it is counted as a "positive symptom."

Diagnostic Criteria

Diagnosis is made based on the following conditions:

  • ADHD-Combined Type: At least 6 positive symptoms (5 for those aged 17 and above) in both attention challenges and behavioral or emotional regulation.
  • ADHD-Predominantly Inattentive Type: At least 6 positive symptoms (5 for those aged 17 and above) in attention challenges.
  • ADHD-Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: At least 6 positive symptoms (5 for those aged 17 and above) in behavioral or emotional regulation.
  • Borderline Type: Total number of positive symptoms is just below the threshold.
  • ADHD Criteria Not Met: Does not meet any of the above criteria.

Additional Conditions

To enhance diagnostic reliability, the following additional conditions are considered:

  • Symptoms must have appeared before the age of 12.
  • Symptoms must be observed in multiple environments (home, school, workplace, etc.).
  • Functional impairment in academics, social relationships, family, or daily life.
