Lean Body Mass Calculation

The lean body mass calculation tool is a tool that allows you to easily calculate your "lean body mass" by simply entering your "weight" and "body fat percentage". You can also calculate your "body fat mass" along with your "lean body mass".

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is the weight excluding body fat. Specifically, it refers to the weight of all tissues other than fat, including muscles, bones, internal organs, blood, and water.

Components of lean body mass

Muscles (skeletal muscles, visceral muscles)

The main part involved in body movement and metabolism.

Bones (bone density, bone mass)

Hard tissues that make up the body's skeleton.

Internal organs

Organs necessary for life support, such as the liver, heart, and kidneys.

Blood and body fluids (water)

Blood and water in the body (about 60% of the body is water).

The role and importance of lean body mass

Indicator of muscle mass maintenance and increase

Measurement of the effectiveness of muscle training and dieting.

Relationship with Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

The more muscle mass you have, the higher your basal metabolic rate and the more energy you will consume.

Maintaining health and preventing obesity

Reducing body fat and maintaining LBM are important for building a healthy body.

Evaluation criteria for medical care and rehabilitation

It is also used to diagnose sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass due to aging).

Points on lean body mass

  • The lower the body fat percentage, the higher your lean body mass (LBM).
  • When muscle mass increases through strength training and exercise, LBM increases.
  • When dieting, maintaining LBM is the key to healthy weight loss.

How to calculate lean body mass

Lean body mass = Body weight (kg) × (1 - body fat percentage)

Body fat mass = Body weight (kg) - Lean body mass

Example of calculating lean body mass

Weight: 70kg

Body fat percentage: 20%

Lean body mass = 70kg × (1 - 20%) = 56kg

Body fat mass = 70kg - 56kg = 14kg
