Grade Point Average

GPA Calculation is a free tool that allows you to easily calculate GPA, which is the evaluation standard for university grades. You can calculate GPA with a simple 5-point evaluation or a detailed 13-point evaluation.

What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is an index that quantifies a student's grades and shows the average. It is mainly used in universities and schools, and is a system for evaluating students' academic performance.

GPA is used for overall evaluation of grades, decisions on promotion and graduation, and scholarship reviews. It is also used as an indicator for students to check their academic progress.

Basic GPA Structure

GPA is calculated by weighting the scores (points) for each subject according to the number of credits, and then dividing the total score for all subjects by the total number of credits. Below is an example of a typical GPA score.

4.0 scale (commonly used in the United States)

  • A = 4.0 (Excellent)
  • B = 3.0 (Good)
  • C = 2.0 (Average)
  • D = 1.0 (Passing)
  • F = 0.0 (Failing)

Basic GPA Calculation Method and Example

Calculation Procedure

  1. Multiply the score for each subject by the number of credits for the subject.
  2. Your GPA will be calculated by adding up the results of 1 for all subjects and dividing by the total number of credits. )

Calculation Example

  • Mathematics (3 credits, grade A = 4.0) → 3 × 4.0 = 12
  • English (2 credits, grade B = 3.0) → 2 × 3.0 = 6
  • Science (1 credit, grade C = 2.0) → 1 × 2.0 = 2
  • GPA = (12 + 6 + 2) / (3 + 2 + 1) = 20 / 6 = approx. 3.33

How to calculate GPA

The GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by weighting the grades for each subject. Convert the grades for each subject into a number, multiply them by the number of credits, add them up, and divide by the total number of credits. Below are the basic steps for calculating GPA.

Steps for calculating GPA

Convert grades into scores

Convert the grades for each subject into scores. The 4.0 scale shown below is the most common.

  • A = 4.0 (Excellent)
  • B = 3.0 (Good)
  • C = 2.0 (Average)
  • D = 1.0 (Passing)
  • F = 0.0 (Failing)

Multiply your grade score by the number of credits

Multiply each subject's score by the number of credits for that subject to get a weighted score for each subject.

Add up the weighted scores for all subjects

Add up the scores multiplied by the number of credits for all subjects.

Divide by total credits

Divide the total score by the total credits to get your GPA.

GPA formula

GPA = ∑ (grade score x number of credits) / total number of credits

Average GPA

Average GPA is a measure of the average performance of a particular student group or course overall. It is calculated by adding up the GPAs of all students and dividing by the number of students.

Basic GPA calculation and example

Add up all student GPAs

Add up the GPAs of all students in a class or course.

Divide by number of students

Divide the total GPA by the number of students.

Average GPA

Average GPAs vary by country, institution, and specific department or program, but are generally in the 2.5-3.0 range.

Factors that affect average GPA

Institutional evaluation criteria

Some universities and graduate schools have strict grading standards, which may result in a lower average GPA.

Major

Science and engineering departments tend to be difficult and have low average GPAs, while humanities and social science departments tend to have relatively high GPAs.

Differences by country

In the United States, the average is often around 3.0, but in some countries, such as Japan, the grading system is different, so the average GPA tends to be different.

General GPA guidelines

  • Over 3.5: Very good (around the top 15-20%)
  • 3.0-3.4: Above average (generally "good")
  • 2.5-2.9: Average (most students fall into this range)
  • Below 2.0: Slightly low grades (may affect grade retention or promotion criteria)

Examples of average GPAs for universities (USA)

  • Harvard University: Approximately 3.6-3.7 (very high)
  • Stanford University: Approximately 3.5
  • Average for state universities: About 2.7 to 3.0

Trends in Japanese Universities

Many Japanese universities have introduced the GPA system, but there is still little data on average GPAs due to different evaluation standards.

Example of GPA score

Evaluation Evaluation (Japanese) Score
A+ Excellent+ 4.3
A Excellent 4
A- Excellent - 3.7
B+ Excellent+ 3.3
B Excellent 3
B- Excellent 2.7
C+ Good+ 2.3
C Good 2
C- Good- 1.7
D+ Possible+ 1.3
D Possible 1
D- Yes - 0.7
F No 0
